Parents Frequently Asked Questions

Alpha Sigma Tau strives to empower women to excel in life.

How will my student benefit from joining a sorority?
There are many benefits to joining a Sorority as well as a larger Greek community at USI. Alpha Sigma Tau is built on five core values: Intellect, Excellence, Graciousness, Respect, and Connections. These values allow your daughter to gain leadership skills through hands on experience, opportunities to actively participate in community service, and academic resources to achieve her educational goals. With Alpha Sigma Tau at USI, your daughter will gain a support group to ease the adjustment of college and a home away from home.

How will joining a sorority affect my student's academics?
As scholarship is one of the main pillars of excellence upon which Fraternity/Sorority Life at USI is built, students are encouraged to not only maintain their academic pursuits, but they are challenged to excel academically. To join Alpha Sigma Tau at USI, a minimum 2.8 GPA is required.

What is the financial obligation if my student joins a sorority?
As with all chapters at USI, Alpha Sigma Tau does have financial obligations that go along with participation in the sorority which should be considered before making the commitment to join. Chapter dues go toward national and chapter expenses as well as the social aspects of the organization. Chapter dues vary each semester and are discussed further during recruitment.

Should I be concerned with hazing?
The university maintains strict policies against hazing, as does Alpha Sigma Tau. Hazing is defined as any action taken or any situation created whether on or off chapter premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Hazing is forbidden and will not be tolerated.

Who is actually in charge of the sorority?
Each Alpha Sigma Tau chapter elects individuals to an Executive Committee to govern their day to day operations of the chapter and to oversee the enforcement of national rules and regulations. In addition to the Executive Committee, the chapter at USI has five alumnae advisors who assist the chapter in ensuring compliance with all policies. Finally, USI has a full time professional Program Advisor for Fraternity/Sorority Life who serves as the primary contact for the USI fraternity and sorority community.
